Four universities emerge champions in Huawei ICT competition

Four universities from Malaysia have made the nation proud as they emerged the top winners in the global finals of the sixth Huawei Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Competition Global Final 2021-2022.

The universities – Multimedia University (MMU), Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) – emerged champions after competing with over 2,000 colleges and universities from more than 85 countries and regions, Huawei said in a statement.

Hosted by the Huawei ICT Academy, this year’s competition, themed “Connection, Glory, Future” was held from June 17 to June 25 in Shenzhen, China, and attracted more than 150,000 students, it added.

The participating countries included the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and Asia, the company said.

According to Huawei, Malaysia has been actively participating in the Huawei ICT Competition since its inception in the country.

It said before embarking to the final, the four universities clinched the first-place position in the sixth Huawei Asia Pacific (APAC) ICT Competition 2021-2022, going head-to-head with 14 other winning universities of the Asia Pacific region before continuing to the finals.

The global final competition tested students in three categories: practice, innovation, and industry.

Team Malaysia took the lead in two out of three categories in the practice and innovation competition, while UMS secured the first spot in the innovation competition.

These students were tested in various areas including artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, big data, and cloud computing and the evaluation was structured towards resolving real-life problems, proposing solutions with social and business values, and designing models with comprehensive functions.

Meanwhile, MMU was awarded the grand prize in the cloud track with UM winning first place in the same category. In addition to that, USM emerged first in the network track.

Huawei Malaysia CEO Michael Yuan applauded the victory of the Malaysian participants in the competition and for making the country’s name shine on the international stage.
